![]() MONASTERIES There are nineteen monastries in Cyprus: eleven Greek Orthodox, four Maronite, three Latin, one Armenian and seven Orthodox Convents. The Church forms an important part of the life in Cyprus and in each village one can be find beautiful examples of church architecture especially from the Byzantine period, many containing exquisite icons and treasures from the past. In fact, nine churches are included by UNESCO on the list of buildings important to the cultural heritage of mankind. Near Coral Bay there is a 12th century elegant monastery of st.Neophytos. The hermit monk carved chambers out of the solid rock to form his own living cell and where the walls are decorated with superb murials. The Royal Kykkos Monastery was founded in 1080 by the Byzantine Emperor Alexios Kommenos and contains an icon reputed to have been painted try St.Luke himself.
